Famous Famous Places In Bristol

Bristol Harbour & Bristol City Docks

Bristol’s historic harbour, situated along the River Avon, has undergone a revitalisation that has breathed new life into its ancient wharves and warehouses, many of which have been restored or converted to modern use. Often referred to as the ‘floating harbour’ due to the tidal diversion constructed in 1809 to maintain a constant water level, Bristol Harbour covers 70 hectares and provides a pleasant experience for strollers.

Today, Bristol Harbour is home to Bristol City Dock and boasts a variety of museums, galleries, entertainment venues and restaurants for young and old alike. Major attractions include the Bristol Aquarium, We the Curious Science Centre and the Arnolfini, a world-class centre for visual arts, music and performance.

With no tides in the harbour, it has become a popular venue for personal watercraft, such as kayaks and paddleboards, as well as local sailing clubs. A large floating section of the River Avon can be paddled from here.

Brunel’s SS Great Britain

The passenger ship Great Britain was the world’s first iron-hulled passenger ship and remains in dry dock, where it was built and launched in 1843. The ship was designed by the famous Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who also pioneered the use of screw propulsion.

Abandoned after being rescued in the Falklands, the ship is now moored in Bristol’s Great Western Docks and is a testament to Brunel’s engineering genius. Visitors can tour the upper decks and explore the lower decks, peering into the luxurious first-class cabins and other categories of humble staterooms.

Bristol Cathedral

Originally, the church of St Augustine’s Abbey, Bristol Cathedral, took its present form nearly 600 years ago. Between 1298 and 1330, the Abbot of Knowle undertook an elaborate and decorative rebuilding of the east end of the church, which enhanced its historic appeal.

The 16th-century central tower and transepts, along with the 19th-century nave and raised west front, give the cathedral its distinctive architectural style. The architectural features of the cathedral, which was raised to cathedral status in 1542, include a rectangular chapel and a large portal dating back to 1170. Visitors can explore the cathedral gardens and enjoy a dessert in the Cathedral Café.

Visitors can book a guided tour in advance or use an audio guide to explore the cathedral on their own.

Brandon Hill Park & Cabot Tower

Cabot Tower, at the top of Brandon Hill, is the city’s landmark. Constructed in 1897 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s journey to North America, this 105-foot-tall tower provides awe-inspiring vistas of the city from both its base and summit.

Ascending to the tower’s apex presents panoramic views of the city and the harbour area, establishing it as one of Bristol’s premier free attractions. Brandon Hill Park, Bristol’s oldest park, also boasts additional attractions such as picturesque picnic areas, walking trails, and playgrounds.

St. Mary Redcliffe

In 1574, Queen Elizabeth I described St Mary Redcliffe as “the most beautiful parish church in England” during her visit. Erected in the 13th century and later extensively renovated in the 15th century in the Baroque fashion, this church is situated on the southern bank of the floating harbour, deriving its name from the red rock foundations upon which it proudly stands.

St Mary Redcliffe’s elegant architecture, with its clustered columns, reticulated arches, hexagonal chancel and ornate gates, reflects the prosperity of Bristol’s wealthy merchants. Notable features of the church include William Hogarth’s triptych ‘Sealing of the Grave‘ and the monument and tomb of Admiral Sir William Penn, father of Pennsylvania’s founder, William Penn. Also worth seeing is the well-preserved organ in the church, which dates back to 1726.

Be sure to visit the Cathedral Café for a delicious meal in the peaceful cathedral gardens. Guided tours of the cathedral are available (pre-booking required) and audio tours (for visitors travelling on their own).
